WHERE IT BEGAN FOR ME
My grandmother kept a familiar.
As a child I called it the cat, and she let me.
It slept at the foot of her bed on a piece of grey wool that no one was allowed to wash, and it had the first spoonful from every pot. I never saw it. I saw the wool, pressed down in the middle.
She taught me the way the women in my family had always been taught. By doing it beside her, and by being asked the next morning what I had noticed.
Later came the grimoire that has been kept in my line, and the reasons written in it. Since then I have found the same five laws everywhere I have looked: in the black books, in the witch trial records, and in what was buried under thresholds thousands of years ago.
Most witchcraft today skips them and starts with the spell. Then nothing happens, and you blame the candle.
WHAT DAY ONE DOES
You stop copying spells. You start seeing the craft.
Most people come to witchcraft with a shelf of books and the feeling that something is missing. They have the words and the candles, but it all feels borrowed.

I am Hazel, a witch of the North. I live in Denmark. My work comes from the old Scandinavian folk magic, from the black books, and from what came down to me through my own line.
I do not teach love and light. I teach the old kind of witchcraft, the kind that was done in kitchens and at the churchyard wall after dark, by people who did not explain themselves to anyone.
